Young Women Increasingly Active in Danish Sports Associations

Young women in Denmark aged 16 to 29 are increasingly participating in sports associations, according to a recent survey. The Sports Analysis Institute (IDAN) released the data on Saturday, highlighting a significant trend in female engagement with organized sports.

The survey indicates a notable rise in participation among women aged 25-29, with the proportion of association-active individuals in this demographic increasing from 28% in 2016 to 36% in 2024. Similarly, the 20-24 age group has seen an increase from 33% to 40% during the same period. Among 16-19-year-olds, membership in sports associations has risen from 47% to 50%.

Frans Hammer, Vice Chairman of the Danish Sports Confederation (DIF), welcomes this development, particularly in an era of “increasing digitalization,” where he believes physical communities play a crucial role. He emphasized the positive impact of sports associations focusing on exercise and community building, rather than solely on competition and results.

The rise in participation spans various sports, including individual activities like dance, gymnastics, running, and strength training, as well as team sports such as handball and football. Ball games are particularly favored by women in the 20-29 age range.
