Woman Helps Orangutan Learn Breastfeeding at Aalborg Zoo

A female zoo visitor helped an orangutan struggling with breastfeeding her newborn at the Aalborg Zoo in Denmark. The orangutan, named Ruti, gave birth on Wednesday and faced difficulties in assuming her maternal role.

Zoo officials stated that Ruti lacked the observational learning experience typical for orangutans in the wild, where they learn from their own mothers. The zoo explored unconventional methods to assist her.

Initially, a zookeeper attempted to demonstrate breastfeeding using a teddy bear, but this approach proved unsuccessful. Later, a female guest with a newborn baby volunteered to show Ruti how to breastfeed.

The zookeeper described the moment as unforgettable, noting the sense of relief throughout the zoo as the baby suckled. The woman’s actions provided a valuable learning experience for Ruti.

Aalborg Zoo plans to reward the woman with a special experience and annual passes for her and her family. She will have input into the experience she receives.

The newborn orangutan is the result of an international breeding program that paired Ruti with a male orangutan named Pal. This successful birth is considered a significant achievement for the zoo and the species, reflecting the well-being of the animals.

Orangutans are critically endangered, native to Borneo and Sumatra. Their populations continue to decline due to deforestation, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
