Woman from Funen Awaits Delayed Terrorism Approval Case Decision

A woman from Funen, Denmark, faces a prolonged wait for a final decision in her criminal case concerning the approval of terrorism, with the appeal scheduled for November 5, 2026. This means more than two years will pass between the city court’s acquittal and the high court’s handling of the appeal.

The Eastern High Court has scheduled the appeal, along with three other similar cases that resulted in full or partial acquittals, for November 2-5, 2026. The prosecution is appealing the city court’s judgment and is demanding a conviction.

The case stems from comments the woman posted on Politiken’s Facebook page following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In one comment, she wrote, “There has been war for 73 years, but only NOW is Hamas really striking back. With good reason!” She is charged with publicly and explicitly approving a terrorist act.

The woman’s defense attorney, Helene Lindberg Brædder, deems the waiting time unreasonable and has requested the high court to find an earlier date. According to Brædder, the delay is particularly stressful for her client, who was already acquitted by the city court.

Originally, Funen Police did not believe there was sufficient grounds for a criminal case. However, the State Prosecutor in Copenhagen had a different assessment.

During the city court proceedings, it was revealed that the woman had been deeply moved and had distanced herself from the terrorist attack in another Facebook comment. She stated, “I don’t wish anyone any harm.”

The case has significantly impacted the woman, a mother of two from North Funen who immigrated to Denmark from Germany as a child. After the case gained attention, authorities decided to administratively revoke her citizenship, citing a mistake made 19 years ago. Furthermore, the prosecution has requested the police to investigate the possibility of deporting her.
