A 28-year-old man has been remanded in custody on suspicion of manslaughter after a 24-year-old woman was found dead at an address outside Grenaa on Djursland. Police discovered the woman’s body on the ground floor of the residence on May 26th, prompted by concerns from healthcare professionals and family members.
The man, who was the woman’s landlord, was found sleeping on the upper floor of the residence and made spontaneous statements to the police indicating he had killed the woman. The detention order reveals that he had been recently discharged from a psychiatric ward. Although his family and healthcare professionals had expressed concerns about his mental state and the female tenant staying with him, there was no legal basis to forcibly admit him, and he declined voluntary admission.
During the preliminary hearing, the 28-year-old pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and declined to comment further. The majority of the court hearing was held behind closed doors due to the ongoing investigation, but the detention order was issued in open court.
The judge determined that there is reasonable suspicion that the man killed the 24-year-old woman by strangulation. The judge also cited the risk of new violent crimes and potential interference with the police investigation as reasons for the custody. Although being held in a regular jail, the man will undergo a mental examination to determine if he should be sentenced to ordinary imprisonment if ultimately charged and convicted.
