Søren Gade’s re-election as Speaker of the Parliament will be put to a vote, marking the first time this has occurred during his tenure. This development arises from the Unity List and The Alternative withdrawing their support for Gade.
Despite the withdrawn support, SF, the Danish People’s Party, and the Social Liberal Party have indicated they will support Gade’s nomination. The government parties are also expected to back him, making it unlikely that a majority will oppose his re-election.
The Denmark Democrats have yet to announce their decision regarding support for Gade.
Gade has faced media scrutiny recently concerning his position as paid chairman of the board of Esbjerg Harbour. Critics have suggested that this dual role could compromise his impartiality, particularly as Esbjerg Harbour is vying to be the construction site for billion-dollar warships.
Liberal Alliance has noted Gade’s reluctance to address questions from national media about his dual roles. However, the party does not believe a change in Speakership is warranted at this stage. They suggest a discussion about the matter may be relevant after the next general election, should Gade again be a candidate for the position.
Gade assumed the role of Speaker of the Parliament in 2022 and has been re-elected annually with unanimous support from all parties. The upcoming vote in October will deviate from this tradition due to the lack of support from the Unity List and The Alternative.
