Søren Gade’s re-election as Speaker of Parliament will be put to a vote for the first time during his tenure. This comes as the Red-Green Alliance and The Alternative withdraw their support for him.
The Denmark Democrats have yet to decide whether they will support Gade, while SF, the Danish People’s Party, and the Social Liberal Party have declared their support for his nomination. The government parties also support him, assuring a majority for his re-election in the upcoming parliamentary year.
Gade has faced scrutiny regarding his role as paid chairman of the board of Esbjerg Harbour, raising concerns about potential impartiality due to the harbor’s bid to host the construction of billion-dollar warships. Liberal Alliance acknowledges Gade’s refusal to address questions from national media about this dual role, but they believe a replacement is unwarranted before the likely final year of the election period. The party suggests a serious discussion after the next parliamentary election if Gade seeks the Speaker position again.
Gade has served as Speaker of Parliament since 2022, with previous re-elections occurring annually with unanimous support from all parties. The upcoming vote in October marks a departure from this custom due to the lack of support from the Red-Green Alliance and The Alternative.
