Vanløse Residents’ Sense of Security Declines at Night

Vanløse is generally considered a safe district in Copenhagen, with 91% of residents feeling secure in their neighborhood. However, this sense of security decreases significantly during the evening and night hours.

A new security survey for 2025 reveals that only 79% of Vanløse residents feel safe at night, with over one in six (16%) feeling decidedly unsafe. This is a higher percentage compared to most other Copenhagen districts, with only Brønshøj-Husum, Bispebjerg, and Østamager reporting higher numbers.

Furthermore, 56% of respondents in Vanløse indicated that there is at least one place in their neighborhood where they feel uneasy walking. The top three locations contributing to this unease are:

  • Stations and bus stops (32%)
  • Paths (24%)
  • Green areas, parks, and playgrounds (20%)

These locations show higher levels of concern than the average across Copenhagen.

Despite the heightened insecurity at night, Vanløse does not experience a disproportionately high crime rate compared to the rest of Copenhagen. In 2024, there were 1,734 reported criminal code offenses in Vanløse, equivalent to 42 reports per 1,000 inhabitants. This reporting level has decreased since 2023 and remains below the Copenhagen average of 73 reports per 1,000 inhabitants in 2024.

While overall crime reporting has decreased, selected crime types such as the sale and possession of narcotics, violence, and financial crime have increased. Over the past decade, there has been a significant reduction in reports of theft and burglary.

Financial crime, as indicated by the security survey, is primarily occurring online through activities such as online fraud, hacking, or phishing. Consequently, it is challenging to directly associate the increase in financial crime with a specific district.
