Two incidents of vandalism against booms on the Great Belt Bridge have been reported to the police by Sund & Bælt, following a major payment system outage on Saturday evening. The outage, which affected all card types and also impacted Norway, Sweden and Iceland, caused significant disruptions and long queues at the bridge.
The payment system failure, which began around 7:30 PM and lasted almost three hours, led to frustrated drivers attempting to force open two booms at the Great Belt Bridge. The Danish Road Directorate reported queues forming in both directions as a result of the outage.
Sund & Bælt’s press officer, Jens Villemoes, acknowledged the difficulties caused by the situation, especially on a busy travel day. While alternative payment methods like MobilePay and cash were available, many foreign travelers required assistance, causing further delays. Villemoes emphasized that customers using Brobizz or license plate payment were not directly affected.
South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police reported that death threats were made against the bridge staff during the chaos. Sund & Bælt has offered support to the affected employees. The cause of the Nets outage is currently unknown.
