Urban Renewal Project in Folehaven Enhances Community Life

A modest but impactful urban renewal project has transformed a previously underutilized green space in the Folehaven neighborhood of Copenhagen into a vibrant community hub. Completed by architectural firm 1:1 Landskab, the project focuses on creating a practical and engaging environment for residents of all ages.

The renewed area, nestled between Frugthaven and Kirsebærhaven, features a large lawn, perennial beds, and a variety of recreational facilities. Elegant, white-lacquered swing sets and a climbing frame provide opportunities for play and exercise. A ball court has been relocated and equipped with features for basketball, football, and futsal, including special lighting that activates when a goal is scored.

The project emphasizes community involvement, with input from residents, churchgoers, nursing home residents, schoolchildren, and families shaping the design. This collaborative process led to the ball court’s relocation to encourage greater participation and visibility. Most of the existing large trees were preserved, and new trees were planted, resulting in a net increase in green space.

A pergola provides shade, and grilling facilities are available for outdoor cooking. The area is enclosed by a wide strip of red bricks and a seating edge made of wood and concrete. Safety is also a key consideration, with soft surfaces installed under the climbing frame and gravel around the swings. The design seamlessly integrates the surrounding architecture, including the hexagonal church, enhancing the overall spatial coherence of the neighborhood.
