Ukrainian Dentist Faces Bureaucratic Hurdles in Denmark

Iryna Kazantseva, a Ukrainian dentist who fled to Denmark in 2022, is struggling to resume her career due to bureaucratic obstacles. Despite her extensive experience and qualifications, she has been unable to obtain a license to practice dentistry in Denmark.

Kazantseva, who headed a dental clinic in Donetsk, Ukraine, has faced numerous challenges in getting her credentials recognized. The Danish Patient Safety Authority requires specific documentation, including a curriculum from her university that no longer exists. This has stalled her application process and left her feeling powerless.

Since arriving in Denmark, Kazantseva has taken Danish classes and integrated into Danish society. However, she is frustrated by the lack of opportunities for highly educated refugees like herself. She has applied for positions in dental clinics and even considered training as a dental assistant, but has been rejected due to her qualifications being either insufficient or excessive.

According to the Danish Agency for Labour Market and Recruitment, although many Ukrainian refugees have found employment, few are in academic roles. Kazantseva believes the system is not equipped to handle newcomers with higher education. She feels a strong desire to contribute her skills and experience but is hindered by the bureaucracy.

The Danish Patient Safety Authority stated that it processes applications in accordance with existing regulations, requiring dentists from non-EU/EEA countries to meet specific conditions. They emphasized the importance of verifying the education and competencies of healthcare professionals for patient safety. While acknowledging Kazantseva’s situation, the authority noted that there are pathways for foreign dentists to obtain Danish authorization, including completing a Danish study program.

Kazantseva remains determined to find a way to practice dentistry in Denmark, despite the challenges. She is taking Danish classes and exploring alternative options, but the process is slow and “demotivating.” Despite everything, she is not giving up and is looking for ways to contribute to Danish society using her professional skills.
