Andrei Kurkov, Ukraine’s foremost living author, has adjusted his outlook on the war’s outcome, citing diminished international support and the prolonged nature of the conflict. Once optimistic about Ukraine’s victory, he now expresses hope for the nation’s continued independence.
Kurkov attributes his changed perspective to the reduction in aid from the United States and the unfulfilled promises of European leaders. He emphasizes that the conflict is not merely three years old, but rather a continuation of Russia’s historical suppression of Ukrainian identity, dating back to the 18th century.
Kurkov highlights the distinct differences between Ukrainian and Russian mentalities, describing Ukrainians as individualistic and freedom-loving, while Russians are more collectivist and seek stability. Despite being ethnically Russian himself, Kurkov observes the shift in language dynamics within Ukraine, where Russian is increasingly becoming stigmatized due to the war.
He notes that Russian troops systematically remove Ukrainian books from occupied territories, yet this has paradoxically strengthened the Ukrainian language’s prominence. Kurkov points out that while younger Ukrainians once aspired to the “European dream” of equality and social justice, waning US support has disillusioned some, leading them to question the American dream.
Kurkov suggests a potential resolution where the front line is frozen, awaiting political change in Russia after Putin’s eventual departure. While acknowledging the persistent threat of future Russian aggression, he believes this is preferable to ongoing bombings and casualties. He also describes the rise in crime, radicalization, and internal divisions within Ukrainian society, fueled by fatigue and the search for traitors.
Despite these challenges, Kurkov finds hope in the resilience of the Ukrainian people, who persevere even in the face of immense loss and destruction. He cites the example of a Kharkiv cafe that continues to serve customers despite repeated damage, symbolizing Ukraine’s unwavering spirit.
