A viral TikTok trend dubbed “Man of the Year” is generating both community and controversy as primarily Gen Z women share negative experiences with past partners. The trend, which has amassed 1.5 billion views, is intended to be ironic.
Experts suggest the trend offers a sense of community and empowerment, while others raise concerns about its potential to reinforce negative stereotypes and create division between genders. TikTok expert Sofie Swienty attributes the trend’s popularity to the feeling of solidarity it provides.
However, the trend has faced criticism. Danish sexologist and couples therapist Patricia Jiménez argues that it can contribute to the perception that all men are dangerous and perpetuate negative stereotypes. There are also arguments about the song being used in the trend, which may not be about relationships at all, but gender identity.
While some users share positive relationship stories using the trend, Jiménez expresses difficulty in understanding the purpose of publicly airing past grievances. She does concede that sharing these experiences can foster a sense of community through shared trauma.
Swienty acknowledges concerns about potential shaming but maintains that the trend’s intention is not to shame. She concludes that individuals must decide for themselves what is appropriate to share online.
