Thursday’s Business Overview: Energy Delays, Pension Reform, Tax Policies, and Economic Shifts

The American chip giant Nvidia experienced a significant drop in its share price on Wednesday, plummeting 3.2 percent in after-hours trading and costing the company $110 billion in market value, after reports indicated a slowdown in growth following two years of rapid expansion and uncertainty surrounding sales in the Chinese market. This decline follows concerns about the company’s future performance and its ability to maintain its previous trajectory.

Meanwhile, in Denmark, Minister of Taxation Rasmus Stoklund (S) has confirmed that secret payments made by unknown financiers to cover citizens’ tax bills in 12 Danish Panama cases are tax-free, classifying them as compensation rather than gifts. This decision has sparked controversy, with Venstre’s tax spokesperson suggesting it could reveal the identity of the secret benefactor.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) is proposing a major pension reform that would introduce a “part-time pension” option, allowing Danes to work fewer hours for reduced pay with state compensation, while simultaneously abolishing early retirement, the Arne pension, and the senior pension, currently utilized by 30,000 Danes. This plan has garnered support from the Confederation of Danish Industry and the Danish Chamber of Commerce.

Additionally, party spokespersons are demanding answers from Energy Minister Lars Aagaard (M) regarding newly revealed assessments indicating extensive delays at the state-owned Energinet, impacting over 50 private projects and potentially causing delays exceeding 90 years. The Conservative energy spokesperson Dina Raabjerg described the situation as “skeletons are starting to fall out of the closet,” as the minister faces increasing scrutiny and has been summoned for consultation.

Finally, figures from the pension fund Danica indicate that layoffs and organizational changes in Danish businesses are negatively affecting employee health, with 16 percent of mental injuries in the workplace attributed to restructuring, leading to sick leave and psychological support needs. The EU is also preparing a new sanctions package against Russia, targeting third countries aiding in sanctions evasion and specifically addressing the kidnapping of Ukrainian children, with potential measures including export bans and restrictions on Russian oil, gas, finance, imports, and exports.
