Several grocery stores have begun placing theft alarms on Marabou chocolate due to an increase in shoplifting. Christoffer Roslyng Green, a press consultant for the Salling Group, which owns Netto, Bilka, and Føtex, confirmed the measure.
The decision is a response to a growing problem of theft, which is forcing stores to use alarms and conceal more goods. Green expressed regret over the necessity of these measures.
Chocolate prices have risen significantly in recent years, reaching record highs in April. Since 2021, reported shop thefts have increased by 77 percent, according to Statistics Denmark. Last year alone, there were 27,996 reports of shop theft, with grocery stores accounting for 70 percent of them.
A survey by the Danish Chamber of Commerce indicates that eight out of ten companies have experienced an increase in shoplifting recently. Statistics Denmark data reveals that the vast majority of shoplifting cases result in a conviction, with 97 percent of cases in 2024 leading to a guilty verdict. Around 90 percent of these convictions resulted in a fine.
