Theater to Introduce Dress Code for Premieres

Østre Gasværk Teater will implement a dress code for premiere performances, aiming to enhance the audience’s experience and create a more festive atmosphere. Artistic Director Søren Møller was inspired by a “black tie” premiere in Amsterdam, which led him to consider how attire can elevate the theatrical experience.

Møller observed a decline in the solemnity surrounding premieres and believes that dressing up shows respect for the performers and the art form. He emphasized that the dress code won’t necessarily require formal wear like tuxedos but will suggest a festive direction, possibly reflecting the theme of the performance.

Møller clarified that this initiative is not intended to make the theater more elitist or less accessible. He stressed that the goal is to highlight the special nature of live theater and encourage audiences to take the experience more seriously. He believes that dressing up can create a unique and memorable evening for both the audience and the performers.

Møller noted that while theater should be accessible to everyone, treating it as a special occasion can enhance the overall experience. He argues that making an effort with attire elevates the event and fosters a sense of shared appreciation for the art. He hopes to create “peaks in life” that make attending the theater more than just a routine activity.
