The Importance of Resistance, Solidarity, and Investment in Defense for Peace and Freedom

The debate surrounding Denmark’s rearmament, support for Ukraine, and investment in defense and emergency preparedness highlights the importance of resisting a “what’s the point?” mentality, as history demonstrates that resistance, solidarity, and building effective defenses are crucial for peace and freedom. This approach is not only ahistorical but also potentially dangerous in a world marked by unrest and crises.

Increased defense spending is seen by some as a threat to welfare and the climate, while others question the need for rearmament altogether. However, passivity disguised as moral superiority can lead to a dangerous underestimation of global realities.

Throughout history, resistance has proven effective, as seen in the Danish resistance movement during the Occupation, the Baltic countries’ struggle for freedom from the Soviet Union, and Ukraine’s recent success in slowing down a superpower through civil resistance and international solidarity. Finland’s defense against the Soviet Union in the Winter War further exemplifies how a small country can offer significant resistance.

Israel, despite its small size, has built a highly effective defense, showcasing the impact of targeted and persistent efforts. This resilience, combined with alliances and support from friendly nations, is crucial for navigating existential threats.

NATO cooperation and EU defense cooperation are vital components of Denmark’s security. The invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran have underscored the need to rediscover faith in the ability to act, arming ourselves with knowledge, preparedness, and unity.

While there is broad political support for strengthening the Defense Forces and supporting Ukraine, resistance to these measures is expected to grow as the financial implications become clear. The cost of approximately DKK 100 billion annually for military and civilian preparedness is substantial, necessitating a direct and open debate about its value and necessity.
