Lotte Rod, spokesperson for the Social Liberal Party (Radikale Venstre), argues that investigating violence among primary school students could exacerbate the issue rather than solve it. She believes that such investigations risk labeling children as either victims or perpetrators, hindering their development and maintaining a negative perception.
Rod emphasizes the importance of providing teachers and educators with the time and resources to understand the root causes of children’s behavior and support them in behaving appropriately. She advocates for focusing on creating safe and supportive school environments rather than implementing new registration systems.
Minister of Education Mattias Tesfaye (S) supports investigating the issue but believes the opposition’s proposal lacks perspective on the role of teachers and management. Rod is concerned that investigations would maintain a particular view of children, potentially worsening the problem by labeling them as victims or perpetrators.
The opposition parties, including LA (Liberal Alliance), DD (The Democrats), K (Conservatives), and DF (Danish People’s Party), have proposed a study to uncover the extent and types of violence among primary school students, identify the perpetrators (including ethnicity), and assess the consequences for all involved, as well as the causes of the violence. Rod believes the focus should be on providing schools with the necessary framework to support children, rather than creating new rules for registration. She suggests that research into bullying indicates that removing a child from the class is not always the solution. Instead, it’s crucial to address the underlying culture and create safe communities.
