The Alternative party is pushing for a nationwide guarantee of clean drinking water for all citizens in Denmark. This initiative was unveiled at the party’s summer group meeting on Wednesday, emphasizing the growing threat to the country’s drinking water supply.
Franciska Rosenkilde, the political leader of The Alternative, stated that the situation is more critical than most Danes realize. The party is advocating for immediate and decisive action to safeguard this essential resource.
A key proposal is an immediate ban on the use of PFAS and other fluoropesticides in Danish agriculture, with a complete phase-out targeted by the end of 2025. Furthermore, The Alternative aims to eliminate all pesticides from Danish agriculture by 2035 to comprehensively protect both the environment and drinking water sources.
Recent data from the Environmental Protection Agency revealed an increase in the agricultural use of PFAS from 2021 to 2024, highlighting the urgency of the proposed measures. While the use of pesticides containing PFAS can be reduced in agriculture, 23 pesticides containing PFAS were banned in July due to their potential to break down and contaminate drinking water supplies.
In the most recent Voxmeter poll, The Alternative garnered 2.1 percent of the vote, with a statistical uncertainty of 0.9 percentage points.
