The Alternative party has proposed a new political initiative to guarantee clean drinking water for all citizens throughout Denmark. The proposal was presented at the party’s summer group meeting on Wednesday, emphasizing the increasing threats to Danish drinking water quality.
A key component of the proposal is an immediate ban on the use of PFAS and other fluorine pesticides in Danish agriculture, with a complete phase-out of these substances targeted for the end of 2025. Furthermore, The Alternative aims to eliminate all pesticides from Danish agriculture by 2035 to safeguard the environment and drinking water sources.
The Environmental Protection Agency reported in June that the agricultural sector’s use of PFAS had increased between 2021 and 2024. While the use of pesticides containing PFAS may have decreased, the party emphasizes the need for further action. In July, 23 pesticides containing PFAS were banned due to their potential to break down and contaminate drinking water supplies.
The proposal also seeks to improve public access to information about drinking water quality. The Alternative suggests creating a website and a mobile application that would provide easily accessible information about water quality in specific locations.
The proposal acknowledges that phasing out all pesticides in Danish agriculture by 2035 may require additional financial support for restructuring. The party suggests that the necessary funds can be allocated from the economic leeway that has expanded in the past year.
According to the latest Voxmeter opinion poll, The Alternative currently holds 2.1 percent of the votes, with a statistical uncertainty of 0.9 percentage points.
