Security policy and defense dominated the 2025 People’s Meeting in Allinge, with an unprecedented military presence and increased lobbying from the defense industry. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen focused on serious matters related to war, while the Armed Forces showcased their equipment and personnel, including F-16 and F-35 flyovers.
The increased focus on security is reflected in a five- or six-fold increase in debates on defense and security compared to previous years. This surge is partly driven by Denmark’s significant investments in new defense equipment, attracting numerous weapons lobbyists.
The visible presence of the Armed Forces included uniformed personnel, naval vessels, and even a team of female Guard Hussars on horseback. Two F-16 fighter jets flew over the meeting, creating a loud spectacle, though opinions were divided on whether the overflights were appropriate, with some criticizing them as violent and insensitive to war veterans.
The People’s Meeting also highlighted concerns about the growing influence of lobbyists in political decision-making. Researchers warned that lobbyists, former advisors, and politicians are playing a crucial role behind the scenes.
The event increasingly resembles the Swedish Almedalsveckan, with large companies and lobbying agencies becoming more visible. This trend has led to higher costs, making it difficult for smaller organizations and parties to participate fully.
Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen is expected to announce increased financial flexibility for the state. Meanwhile, the Liberal Alliance has slipped to second place in the polls, potentially due to the absence of Alex Vanopslagh.
