Team Esbjerg suffered a narrow 29-30 defeat at home to Metz in their opening Champions League match, missing the chance to complete a Danish winning streak after victories for Odense and Ikast earlier in the weekend.
The match, characterized by the absence of several key players on both sides, lacked a consistent rhythm. Despite this, Esbjerg managed to gain a slight advantage before halftime, leading 13-10, but Metz responded, resulting in a 15-15 tie at the break, secured by a penalty from Nora Mørk.
Esbjerg again took control in the second half, establishing a 21-18 lead, but Metz fought back to take a 28-26 lead. The game remained close until the end, with Anna Kristensen’s save giving Esbjerg a chance to lead 30-29. However, their attack faltered, and Metz capitalized, securing the win with a save from goalkeeper Johanna Bundsen.
For Metz, the victory marks a significant step towards securing a top-two finish in the group stage, which would guarantee direct advancement to the quarter-finals. The win also serves as revenge for their losses to Esbjerg in the previous two Final 4 bronze medal matches.
Nora Mørk’s performance was a highlight for Esbjerg, indicating her recovery after her pregnancy. However, star player Henny Reistad remained an unused substitute.
This loss marks Esbjerg’s third setback in their first four matches of the season, following a loss to Odense in the Super Cup and a draw against Silkeborg-Voel in the league. Esbjerg will need to improve their performance if they hope to advance far in the Champions League.
