Study Shows Increasing Cases of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Denmark

A new study warns of a dramatic increase in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in Denmark, with cases expected to rise significantly in the coming years. Professor and chief physician Johan Burisch, a co-author of the study, is urging people to be aware of the symptoms and take preventative measures.

The study, published in the Health Policy Journal and Nature, estimates that the proportion of Danes suffering from IBD will increase from approximately one percent today (around 58,000 people) to 1.59 percent by 2043. IBD, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic inflammatory diseases of the intestine that are currently incurable.

IBD can affect anyone, but is most common among 20-30 year olds. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, changes in bowel movements (typically diarrhea), fatigue, fever, weight loss, and blood in the stool.

While there is a genetic component to IBD, lifestyle factors are also believed to play a significant role. Professor Burisch recommends a diet low in meat, animal fat, emulsifiers, and ultra-processed foods, and high in fiber and vegetables. He also advises regular exercise and avoiding smoking, especially to reduce the risk of Crohn’s disease.
