A statue of the iconic Irma girl will be erected in Frederiksberg, commemorating the former grocery store chain as a significant part of the area’s history. The decision was made by a majority vote in the Environment and Traffic Committee on Monday evening.
The statue will be placed in the square in front of the Codan building by SuperBrugsen on Gammel Kongevej, the former location of an Irma store. The approved plans, available on Frederiksberg Municipality’s website, indicate that the statue will be approximately two meters high and constructed from bronze and granite.
The project will be financed by Alfred Josefsen, the former director of Irma, ensuring no cost to Frederiksberg Municipality. Coop is also reportedly contributing to the funding.
While the proposal received support from the committee, it has also faced opposition. Anders Storgaard (K) voiced concerns about the statue being perceived as advertising for an “active brand icon.”
Berlingske’s art editor, Holger Dahl, has expressed skepticism, describing the project as a sign of cultural poverty. Dahl suggested that if a memorial were to be erected, it should be located at the site of the first Irma store in Nørrebro, questioning the connection between Irma and Frederiksberg.
The specific artist who will create the statue has not yet been revealed.
