The State Auditors have sharply criticized the Ministry of Defence for inadequate maintenance of its buildings, citing a lack of oversight, planning, and spending of allocated funds. The criticism, detailed in a statement released Monday, highlights neglected barracks and poor accommodation conditions within the Defence sector.
The Ministry of Defence lacks a comprehensive understanding of the condition of many of its buildings and has failed to implement a long-term maintenance plan. Furthermore, the ministry has not fully utilized the funds specifically designated for maintenance purposes.
The auditors’ report reveals instances of neglected barracks and substandard living conditions within the Defence, affecting conscription areas as well. Problems such as mould in common areas and malfunctioning sewer, toilet, and bathing facilities have been identified.
Over the past three years, the Danish Working Environment Authority has issued more than 100 orders to the Ministry of Defence, with a third requiring immediate action.
Despite recent significant budget increases for the Defence, allocated funds are not being fully utilized. From 2018 to 2023, DKK 2.6 billion was allocated for building maintenance, but only DKK 1.8 billion was spent.
The audit reveals that actual spending was almost DKK 800 million less than the amount allocated in the budget law.
