State Acquisition of Knudshoved Harbour for Great Belt Bridge Contingency

The state, through Sund & Bælt, is set to acquire Knudshoved Harbour on Funen to safeguard against potential extended closures of the Great Belt Bridge. This follows the recent purchase of Halsskov Ferry Port on Zealand, positioning the state on both sides of the bridge.

Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen emphasized the need for proactive measures in light of current uncertainties and the strategic importance of infrastructure. He stated that acquiring Knudshoved Harbour is a prudent step to mitigate potential disruptions.

The owner of Knudshoved Harbour, Peter Poulsen, stated he was informed via email from the minister about the state’s decision to purchase the harbour. Poulsen characterized the acquisition as an expropriation, as there were no prior negotiations.

Sund & Bælt intends to undertake a significant reconstruction of Halsskov Ferry Port. The renovated port will also support future maintenance operations for the Great Belt Bridge.

The two ports were previously operated by the Great Belt Ferries until 1998, when the bridge’s completion rendered ferry services obsolete. Søren Ulrik Hillersborg, Technical Director of Operations at Sund & Bælt, explained that substantial reconstruction and investment are necessary to make Halsskov Ferry Port suitable for ferry deployment.
