The Danish state is set to acquire Knudshoved Harbor on Funen to bolster its preparedness against prolonged closures of the Great Belt Bridge. Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen conveyed this plan to TV 2, emphasizing the strategic importance of the harbor in strengthening the country’s resilience to potential disruptions.
The acquisition, managed through the state-owned Sund & Bælt, mirrors the recent purchase of Halsskov Ferry Harbor on Zealand. These harbors, strategically positioned on opposite sides of the Great Belt Bridge, are key to the state’s contingency plans.
Peter Poulsen, the current owner of Knudshoved Harbor, revealed that he was informed of the state’s decision via email from the minister. He described the state’s action as an expropriation, highlighting the lack of prior negotiations. Expropriation involves the compulsory transfer of private property to the state in return for compensation.
