Spelling Error in Danish Exam Affects Grades

Several 9th-grade students in Denmark received lower grades on their final Danish exam than they deserved due to a spelling error in the digital grading system. The error stemmed from the word “tresserne” (sixties), where the system failed to recognize the alternative, yet correct, spelling “60’erne.”

The trade magazine Folkeskolen reports that the issue has been rectified in the testogprøver.dk grade overview. For some students, this error resulted in a significant grade reduction, such as one student who was initially marked down from a 12 to a 10.

Teacher Finn Bangsgaard from Overlund Skole in Viborg highlighted the advantages of digital testing for spelling accuracy but emphasized the need to ensure error-free digital correction. Folkeskolen did not specify the total number of students impacted by this error.

Furthermore, the 10th-grade written English exam also experienced technical difficulties, causing disruption across the country. A technical glitch on May 8 prevented students from writing their answers directly in the assignment. While some schools implemented alternative solutions, TV 2 Østjylland reported that these answers were deemed invalid. Affected 10th-grade students will have the option to retake the English exam on June 20.
