Spelling Error in Danish 9th Grade Exam Affects Student Grades

A spelling error in the digital grading system for the Danish 9th-grade final exam led to some students receiving lower grades than they deserved. The error involved the spelling of the decade “the sixties,” where the system incorrectly marked the accepted spelling “60’erne” as wrong.

The professional journal Folkeskolen reported that the issue has been rectified within the testogprøver.dk system. The mistake impacted students’ overall scores, in some cases altering their grades significantly.

Finn Bangsgaard, a teacher at Overlund Skole in Viborg, highlighted the issue. One of his students, for instance, was initially awarded a 10 but should have received a 12. Bangsgaard pointed out the importance of ensuring accuracy in digital correction systems, particularly in spelling tests.

While digital testing offers advantages, like legibility compared to handwritten exams, it’s crucial to eliminate errors in the automated grading process. Folkeskolen did not specify the total number of students affected by this particular error.
