Søren Kragh Andersen of Lidl-Trek emerged victorious at the Danish National Road Race Championship in Aalborg, securing his first national title. The 30-year-old cyclist from Funen triumphed after a challenging race marked by strong winds and a demanding course.
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Andersen, whose season had been hampered by setbacks. These included a saddle sore that impacted his performance in the spring classics and a broken wrist that forced his early exit from the Giro d’Italia after just four stages.
Mads Pedersen, Andersen’s teammate and a pre-race favorite, played a crucial role in the victory. Despite initially falling behind, Pedersen relentlessly fought his way back to the front, ultimately controlling Casper Pedersen (Quick-Step) in the final laps. This strategic move allowed Søren Kragh Andersen to launch a solo attack and secure the win.
Pedersen himself finished second, ensuring a 1-2 finish for Lidl-Trek. Casper Pedersen completed the podium in third place, while young talent Albert Withen Philipsen, also from Lidl-Trek, finished fourth.
The race was characterized by strong winds from the outset, leading to a rapid separation of the field. Only the strongest riders managed to stay at the front, highlighting the demanding nature of the competition. Continental teams struggled to make an impact, and the race ultimately came down to individual strength.
