Søren Gade Faces Criticism Over Dual Role in Parliament and Esbjerg Harbor

Søren Gade, a prominent Liberal politician, is under increasing scrutiny for his dual role as chairman of Esbjerg Harbor and member of Parliament, amidst concerns of potential conflicts of interest regarding a billion-kroner order for new Danish naval ships. Critics fear Gade’s positions could give Esbjerg Harbor an unfair advantage in securing the shipbuilding contract.

Documents obtained by Berlingske reveal close communication between Esbjerg Harbor and Semco Maritime, a key player in the Danske Flådeskibe K/S consortium bidding to construct the warships in Esbjerg. These documents contradict Gade’s earlier claim that Esbjerg Harbor has “absolutely nothing to do with shipbuilding”.

The controversy began weeks ago, escalating as critics from both sides of Parliament voiced concerns that Gade’s influence could sway the decision-making process in Christiansborg, the seat of the Danish Parliament. Specifically, the concern revolves around whether Gade’s dual roles could improperly favor Esbjerg as the production site for the new ships.

The documents show that in January 2024, Esbjerg Harbor Director Dennis Jul Pedersen contacted Semco Maritime about “Facilities for Danish Patrol Ships,” presenting the company with a project proposal. A Semco Maritime vice president responded positively, calling it an “exciting opportunity”.

Further email exchanges in February 2024 discussed a “Construction Hall for Patrol Ships,” with Semco Maritime requesting Esbjerg Havn to find the price of the hall and come up with financing proposals. In September 2024, Pedersen followed up with Semco Maritime to inquire about the political process for awarding the tasks.

Lise Bech of the Denmark Democrats expressed her disappointment but not surprise, stating that while Gade’s name isn’t directly mentioned, it’s unlikely he was unaware of these developments. She emphasized that Esbjerg Harbor clearly has an interest in securing the shipbuilding contract.

Peder Hvelplund of the Red-Green Alliance suggested Gade should consider stepping down from either his parliamentary or harbor position, arguing that the revelations have “perforated” his previous explanations. Hvelplund believes Gade is burdened by the situation because, as chairman, he should be fully informed about the harbor’s activities.

Pedersen stated that the harbor works with its customers to meet their needs, aiming for a more modern and efficient shipyard. He clarified that for the harbor, the ultimate goal is land rental.

Gade has declined to comment on the matter, refusing interviews.
