Significant Geographical Disparities in Higher Education Attainment Across Municipalities

A new survey from Statistics Denmark reveals significant geographical differences in the proportion of residents aged 25-45 who have completed higher education. The data, released on Monday, highlights a divide between municipalities, with some areas showing significantly higher rates of educational attainment than others.

Gentofte Municipality leads the nation with 74 percent of its 25-45 year olds having attained a higher education in 2024. This is the highest proportion in the country.

Following Gentofte, other municipalities located north of Copenhagen, including Rudersdal and Lyngby-Taarbæk, also demonstrate high proportions of residents with higher education.

In contrast, Lolland, Morsø, and Brøndby have the lowest proportions, with only 39 percent of their 25-45 year old residents having completed a higher education.

The survey also indicates variations in the types of higher education pursued across different municipalities. In areas with high proportions of residents with higher education, long-cycle programs are the most prevalent.

Conversely, in municipalities with the lowest proportions of higher education attainment, medium-cycle programs represent the largest share.

The national average for 25-45 year olds with higher education was 53 percent in 2024. This represents a 12 percentage point increase since 2014, indicating a nationwide trend toward increased higher education attainment.
