A 24-year-old foreign national was arrested Sunday evening after attempting to evade police by jumping into Copenhagen Harbor. The incident occurred after the man allegedly stole goods from a store in the area.
Police were alerted to the situation at 8:08 PM and responded to the harbor promenade near Havnegade and Peder Skrams Gade, close to Nyhavn. The suspect, having been discovered stealing, fled through the streets before leaping into the water in an attempt to escape.
According to duty officer Michael Andersen, the stolen goods were valued at 3000 kroner.
The shoplifter’s aquatic escape proved unsuccessful, as he was quickly apprehended after being pulled from the harbor. He now faces charges for shoplifting but will not appear before a judge for preliminary questioning.
