Shezan Restaurant Review: A Culinary Journey Through Time in Copenhagen

Shezan, a Pakistani/Indian restaurant established in 1978, offers a glimpse into the past in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro district. Despite some dishes being more remarkable than others, the restaurant provides a budget-friendly dining experience with generous portions. Located on Istedgade, Shezan stands as one of the oldest establishments of its kind in Denmark, predating the area’s urban renewal.

The restaurant’s menu is extensive, featuring a range of appetizers and main courses. Among the appetizers, the onion bhaji stands out with its crispy exterior, airy interior, and balanced chili spice. The papadams, while acceptable, are accompanied by a passable mint dip.

For the main courses, the prawn bhuna, featuring small shrimp in a tomato-based sauce, is flavorful despite the shrimp’s briny taste. The garlic naan and fried rice complement the dish well. However, the lamb biryani is the star of the show, boasting tender, crispy lamb pieces mixed with perfectly prepared rice and sweet and sour dried plums. The chicken shahi korma, while decent, doesn’t surpass typical takeaway quality.

Shezan’s decor includes elephant figurines, paintings from the Indian subcontinent, and carpets, creating a cozy atmosphere. The service is provided by the owner, adding a personal touch to the dining experience. Despite its age and history, Shezan remains a surprisingly affordable option, offering ample food and drinks at a reasonable price.
