Denmark is under a severe weather alert due to the risk of heavy rain and local cloudbursts. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) issued warnings covering much of the country, starting Tuesday midday.
The initial warning was in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, with expectations of 25 to 35 millimeters of rain within that period. Tessebølle, south of Køge, reportedly experienced a double cloudburst, measuring 34.6 millimeters of precipitation in just 30 minutes.
An extended warning is in place from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, forecasting between 30 and 50 millimeters of rain. Some areas may experience local cloudbursts during this time.
The conditions are caused by a clash between warm, humid air and a cold front, with the front expected to linger overnight. Some regions could accumulate up to 50 millimeters of rain within a 24-hour period.
DMI advises the public to be aware of how the weather could impact their surroundings and outdoor activities. Heavy rain is defined as exceeding 24 millimeters in 6 hours over a large area, while a cloudburst occurs when at least 15 millimeters of precipitation falls in 30 minutes.
