Salling Group’s Netto, Føtex, and Bilka stores activated offline payment options for Dankort terminals on Saturday in response to the Nets outage. This allowed customers to continue making purchases despite the disruption.
While the full impact of Saturday evening’s Nets outage on Salling Group’s stores is still being assessed, past experiences indicate that the stores are generally not significantly affected by such incidents.
Nets’ press officer, Søren Winge, advised stores to switch to “offline mode” to facilitate uninterrupted customer payments. Offline payment requires a physical payment card and PIN code entry. It is compatible with all types of Dankort. Visa and Mastercard offline payment availability depends on the individual bank’s policy. Digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay are not usable for offline transactions.
The National Bank estimates that most individuals can sustain basic consumption for about 10 days using a payment card, even with restrictions on offline payments. The cause of Saturday’s Nets outage, which affected Denmark and the wider Nordic region, remains unknown.
