Former German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck is expected to join the Danish Institute for International Studies (Diis) as a senior analyst. Diis director Peter Kragelund confirmed the likely appointment to Politiken.
Habeck, who previously served as Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, has strong ties to Denmark, having been an exchange student at Roskilde University and is a fluent Danish speaker. He is expected to focus on the significant shifts in European defense and security policy.
The announcement of Habeck’s intentions also appeared in the Bundesanzeiger, a supplement to the German Law Gazette. In addition to his role at Diis, Habeck plans to work as a visiting professor at universities outside Europe and engage in public speaking.
Habeck stepped down from the Green party leadership after the party’s performance in the February 2025 election, where they saw a decline in votes from 14.7 percent to 11.6 percent. While the final contract is pending, Kragelund anticipates Habeck’s arrival at the Copenhagen-based research institute. Whether Habeck will reside in Copenhagen is currently unknown.
