Roads Remain Closed in Esbjerg Due to Flood Damage After Heavy Rainfall

Three areas in Esbjerg remain cordoned off due to suspected undermining following Thursday’s heavy rainfall and flooding. According to a press release issued Thursday evening by the South and Southern Jutland Police, the affected locations are Strandby Kirkevej by the railway, Skolebakken by the station, and Storebæltsvej.

Authorities suspect the roads may be damaged due to the flooding, prompting the closures. The risk of undermining will be further investigated Friday morning, and the cordons will remain in place until then, according to duty officer Jacob Matthiesen.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, the heavy rainfall caused significant flooding in Esbjerg, leading police to advise against unnecessary travel and outdoor activities. Manhole covers were dislodged by the floodwaters.

While authorities report that known flooded road sections were pumped free of water Thursday evening, road users are urged to remain cautious due to potentially hazardous conditions and minor closures caused by open sewer grates in some areas of the city. The press release also notes damage to bridges in Nøddelunden and Den Hemmelige Skov.

The Grøn Koncert festival, which was taking place in Esbjerg on Thursday, was evacuated as a result of the extreme weather. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) reported cloudbursts in the area Thursday afternoon.
