Risk of Thunderstorms and Local Downpours Across Denmark

Denmark is bracing for a week of unsettled weather, with a risk of thunderstorms and local downpours expected across the country, except for Bornholm. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) issued an updated risk message indicating the potential for significant rainfall in the coming days.

The risk message highlights the possibility of downpours, defined as more than 15 millimeters of rain falling within 30 minutes. While not a warning, the message signals the potential for challenging weather conditions that could escalate.

The wet weather may persist into Tuesday and Wednesday in some areas. Tuesday specifically carries a risk of substantial rainfall, potentially reaching between 30 and 50 millimeters within a 24-hour period in the northern parts of the country.

DMI meteorologist Mette Wagner noted that forecasts vary regarding the precise amount of precipitation. The highest probability of heavy rainfall is currently predicted for North Jutland and North Zealand.

The anticipated weather conditions are attributed to a combination of warm, humid air ahead of an approaching cold front, set to move into the country on Tuesday morning.

This interaction of air masses leads to the formation of large cumulonimbus clouds, which are responsible for showers that could be locally intense and accompanied by thunder.

DMI’s long-range forecast issued on July 8th anticipated a cloudy and showery week 29, beginning on Monday. Week 30 is expected to bring more dry and sunny conditions, with precipitation levels slightly below the seasonal norm.
