Risk of Heavy Rain and Cloudbursts in Parts of Denmark

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a risk report for heavy rain and local cloudbursts affecting the South Funen archipelago, South Zealand, Lolland, and Falster tonight. The risk is expected to extend to the rest of Zealand later in the night.

A risk report from DMI indicates weather conditions that have the potential to develop into a situation requiring a warning.

The expected rainfall is due to a low-pressure area forming over the Netherlands and Belgium, which is predicted to move northeast and impact Denmark in the late afternoon or early evening. This will bring rain and showers, potentially heavy and accompanied by thunder, to the affected regions.

A cloudburst is defined as rainfall exceeding 15 millimeters within 30 minutes, while heavy rain is defined as more than 24 millimeters of rain in six hours.

Cloudbursts are most common in Denmark during the summer months. The first cloudbursts of the year occurred on June 1st in three locations in Jutland.
