Revenue from Confiscated Reckless Driving Vehicles Totals Millions

The Danish state has generated 51.2 million kroner in revenue from selling vehicles confiscated due to reckless driving since 2021. This information was disclosed in a response to the Legal Affairs Committee of the Danish Parliament (Folketinget).

The National Police (Rigspolitiet) clarified that this figure represents the net income after deducting any associated costs, such as fees.

The revenue has increased significantly over the years. In the financial year 2021, the revenue was 1.6 million kroner, while in 2024, it rose to 24.5 million kroner.

The rules regarding reckless driving encompass various offenses, including extremely reckless driving, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of 2.0, and exceeding the speed limit by 100 percent while driving at least 100 kilometers per hour. It also covers negligent manslaughter under particularly aggravating circumstances and intentionally endangering life and limb.

A law that took effect in March 2021 allows for the confiscation and auctioning of vehicles used in such instances. The police implemented a new accounting procedure following the law’s amendment to track vehicles auctioned specifically under these regulations.

The National Police put the sale of cars on hold earlier in 2025 due to a disagreement with the Tax Administration (Skattestyrelsen) regarding whether VAT should be applied to the police’s sale of various items.
