Reusable Surgical Gown Developed in Central Denmark to Reduce Environmental Impact

Region Midtjylland has developed a reusable surgical gown aimed at significantly reducing environmental impact. The initiative is projected to save at least 244 tons of CO2 emissions and 30 tons of waste annually within the region.

The gown, designed for use in operating rooms and as protective equipment, is washable, sterilizable, and reusable. Notably, the new gown is free of PFAS substances, which are difficult to decompose.

Executive Director Anders Kjærulff stated the region’s pride in being the first in Europe, possibly the world, to achieve this and expressed a willingness to share their knowledge. Project manager Maria Højholt Jensen emphasized that the reusable solution is cost-neutral compared to the current disposable option.

The region plans to implement the use of the reusable gown across all its hospitals. Marlene Fredborg, head of the Center for Sustainable Hospitals, hopes to expand the initiative nationwide and is exploring collaboration opportunities.

A nationwide adoption of the gown could potentially save the environment from 1800 tons of CO2 emissions and 930 tons of waste each year. The development marks a shift from single-use surgical garments to a more sustainable approach in healthcare.
