Denmark is experiencing an unusually low mosquito population this spring and early summer, marking a potential record. Experts attribute this phenomenon to the exceptionally dry conditions seen across the country in recent months.
René Bødker, a mosquito researcher at the University of Copenhagen, notes he has never observed such a reduced number of mosquitoes in June. The lack of rainfall has significantly impacted mosquito breeding, as these insects rely on standing water to reproduce.
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) reports that spring 2025 was the second sunniest since 1920. The months of March, April, and May recorded an average temperature of 8.6 degrees Celsius nationwide. This follows the warmest spring recorded in 2024, which had an average temperature of 9.1 degrees Celsius.
