Randers Municipality to Strengthen Technical and Environmental Administration After Nordic Waste Case

In response to a critical legal investigation regarding the Nordic Waste case, Randers Municipality is planning to bolster its technical and environmental administration. Mayor Torben Hansen announced the move, emphasizing the need for improved employee skills through further education.

The decision follows a theme meeting where city council members discussed the legal investigation presented by independent investigator Henrik Græsdal. The investigation criticized the municipality’s oversight of Nordic Waste, a soil remediation company, leading up to a major landslide on December 19, 2023.

While the investigation acknowledged that the landslide might not have been entirely preventable, it concluded that earlier detection could have mitigated its extent. Hansen stated that the municipality has taken note of the criticism detailed in the 666-page report and recognizes areas for improvement.

The mayor emphasized the importance of learning from the situation. The possibility of personnel consequences, initially raised on Monday, was also a topic of discussion during the theme meeting.

Hansen acknowledged differing opinions on potential personnel changes, stating that discussions will continue. He plans to present his proposals for action at a city council meeting, either in September or October, with the next ordinary meeting scheduled for September 22nd.
