Problems with Tesla Model Y and Model 3 in Denmark

Owners of Tesla Model Y and Model 3 vehicles in Denmark are facing potential inspection failures due to excessive play in the steering wheel and suspension systems. The issue, affecting popular models owned by approximately 80,000 Danes, has prompted the car owners’ organization, FDM, to advise Tesla owners to seek independent inspections before their car warranties expire.

FDM reported that nearly 25% of Model 3 vehicles from 2020 failed their first inspection in 2024 due to significant play in the steering and rear suspension. The organization has described the failure rate as “extremely high,” noting that the play observed is usually only seen in older, high-mileage vehicles.

According to FDM, the play in the steering wheel of many Tesla cars allows it to be moved from side to side and up and down. Lone Otto, area manager in FDM’s technical advisory service, stated that such play in suspension and steering is concerning because these components are crucial for safety, leading to inspection failures.

Tesla has reportedly rejected the notion that the play is problematic, leading to a conflict with car owners. Despite the vehicles being under the manufacturer’s four-year warranty, Tesla does not intend to cover the costs of repairs if the cars fail inspection due to this issue.

Tesla argues that the play falls within the limit values specified in the car’s service manual and does not affect the car’s safety. The company has stated that repairs within these limits are not covered by the warranty.

FDM claims Tesla has previously covered similar issues. The organization also points out the lack of specific guidelines or values for acceptable play from the Danish Road Traffic Authority.

The Danish Road Traffic Authority has stated that inspection companies are responsible for determining whether detected play is significant on a case-by-case basis. They have affirmed that Tesla cars must be inspected under the same requirements and methods as all other cars.

In related news, Tesla sales in Denmark have declined significantly, with a 55% decrease in the first half of the year compared to the previous year.
