Prime Minister’s Refusal to Return to Bloc Politics Faces Challenges

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s rejection of a return to bloc politics after the upcoming election is being challenged, with opposition parties suggesting her stance may not hold. Enhedslisten’s political leader, Pelle Dragsted, believes Frederiksen has adopted too many policies from Venstre and Moderaterne within the current coalition government.

Dragsted anticipates that if election results align with current polls, Enhedslisten and SF will hold significant influence, leading Frederiksen to negotiate with them. He suggests the Prime Minister will likely seek discussions with their parties to secure a governing majority.

Frederiksen stated at The People’s Meeting that she “cannot imagine” supporting a return to bloc politics, citing significant disagreements with Enhedslisten on crucial issues. She has expressed reservations about relying on bloc-based governance.

However, Dragsted argues that the current government is already pursuing a “center-right bloc policy.” He claims that the existing coalition is effectively operating as a bloc, albeit one centered on center-right ideologies.

Echoing this sentiment, SF chairman Pia Olsen Dyhr expressed skepticism about Frederiksen’s statement, asserting that bloc politics have not been prevalent in Denmark since Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s tenure as Prime Minister. Dyhr emphasizes the importance of forming a government aligned with the majority if a red bloc majority emerges after the election. She hopes to avoid a repetition of the previous situation, where a red majority led to a center-right government.

Dyhr does not foresee the likelihood of another cross-middle government. The future direction hinges on the voters’ decision and whether they prioritize a red government by supporting SF.
