Prime Minister Emphasizes Government Achievements and Future Collaboration

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has highlighted the concrete achievements of the current centrist government, despite previous perceptions of internal strife. Speaking in front of Parliament Hall, Frederiksen emphasized the government’s successes in areas such as welfare, employment, and national security.

Frederiksen’s remarks followed comments from Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov, who expressed his party’s desire for a similar broad centrist government following the next parliamentary election. The Prime Minister interpreted Bødskov’s statement as an affirmation of his satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration between the Social Democrats, Venstre, and the Moderates. Frederiksen echoed this sentiment, stating her own contentment with the current government.

This positive outlook contrasts with the Prime Minister’s earlier assessment of the government as “strange,” a sentiment expressed just nine months prior. Since its formation in December 2022, the government has faced criticism for unpopular proposals and a perceived lack of results. Disagreements on issues such as the abolition of Great Prayer Day and changes to the retirement age have strained the coalition.

The government’s struggles have also been reflected in voter sentiment. A recent poll indicated widespread disapproval across numerous policy areas. Furthermore, the timeframe for adjusting the system that automatically raises the retirement age remains a contentious issue.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has urged for a specific date to be set, emphasizing the importance of planning the country’s economy. However, Frederiksen has not provided a definitive answer. Similarly, she has remained noncommittal regarding the Social Democrats’ future government aspirations, stating that the decision ultimately rests with the Danish people.
