Prime Minister Apologizes to Greenlandic Women in Spiral Case

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has issued an apology to Greenlandic women who experienced systematic discrimination in the “spiral case.” This case concerns instances where intrauterine devices (IUDs), also known as spirals, were inserted into women without their informed consent.

The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement on Wednesday acknowledging Denmark’s responsibility for healthcare in Greenland up until 1992. Frederiksen stated that the spiral case has caused anger and sorrow for many Greenlanders and families, impacting their perception of Denmark and the Commonwealth.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Chairman of Naalakkersuisut, also apologized for cases occurring after Greenland assumed responsibility for its healthcare system. He expressed remorse to those who underwent interventions without their consent or control and lived with the consequences.

Naalakkersuisut recognizes its own responsibility and has decided to provide compensation to affected women. An announcement regarding the application process for compensation will be made soon, with work on this initiative ongoing since January.

An independent investigation into the spiral case is expected to be published in September after multiple delays.
