PFAS Found in Eggs from Hobby Hens in Denmark

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has discovered PFAS substances in eggs from hobby hens, prompting calls for moderation in consumption. Out of 20 tested egg samples, 8 were found to contain the substances, raising concerns among poultry keepers.

The source of the contamination remains undetermined, but researchers suggest that free-range hens may be exposed through plants, earthworms, and insects that have absorbed PFAS from the environment.

Unit Manager Henrik Dammand Nielsen from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration advises poultry keepers to diversify their egg consumption. He recommends supplementing home-grown eggs with purchased eggs to reduce the risk of exposure.

Finn Jensen, chairman of the poultry association Frit Fjerkræ, stated that he was not surprised by the findings due to the widespread presence of PFAS in the environment. Jensen acknowledged the presence of PFAS in the environment and, consequently, in the eggs.

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency recently banned 23 pesticides containing PFAS active substances due to the risk of groundwater contamination. This decision aligns with a national action plan to address PFAS pollution, supported by a unanimous parliament.

PFAS, a group of substances used since the 1950s, are known for their persistence and potential harm to the environment and human health. The substances are suspected of being endocrine disruptors and potentially carcinogenic.
