Performance Art Evolves Beyond Provocation with Serious Methods

Christian Falsnaes, a prominent figure in international performance art, is pushing the boundaries of the medium by incorporating techniques from mainstream acting and theater. His work challenges the notion that performance art is merely shocking or comical, advocating for a more serious and critically evaluated approach.

Falsnaes emphasizes the importance of rigorous training and execution in performance art. He prepared for a recent performance by undergoing intensive weight training and consulting with a stylist to ensure his character’s appearance was authentic. This dedication reflects his belief that performance art should be treated with the same seriousness as other established art forms like painting and sculpture.

Falsnaes’ journey into performance art began unexpectedly during a European trip where he became involved in a “do it yourself” art scene. He later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and has since gained recognition for his work, culminating in a professorship at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste.

His performances often involve direct interaction with the audience, blurring the lines between artist and spectator. Falsnaes encourages audiences to consider their roles and responsibilities within the performance.

Falsnaes is not alone in this movement toward a more refined performance art. He notes that performance classes are now established at academies, and museums are increasingly taking the medium seriously. This evolution mirrors the development of video art, which initially faced similar skepticism but has since become a respected art form.

An exhibition of Falsnaes’ work, titled “Stage”, is currently on display at Randers Kunstmuseum. The exhibition features interactive elements where visitors can participate in a performance by following spoken instructions via headphones.
