People’s Meeting in Allinge Offers Free Experiences and Raises Concerns About Rising Accommodation Costs

The annual Folkemøde (People’s Meeting) in Allinge, Bornholm, is underway, drawing large crowds with its unique blend of political debate and free offerings. Attendees are taking full advantage of the numerous opportunities for free food, drinks, and merchandise, creating a vibrant atmosphere. However, concerns are rising about the increasing cost of accommodation on Bornholm during the event, potentially hindering accessibility for all.

The event, often described as a democratic alternative to the Roskilde Festival, features over 3,500 events, including talks on topics ranging from municipal waste sorting to EU agricultural policy. Participants can engage in discussions, play games like “Constitution Bingo,” and listen to presentations from government officials and thought leaders.

Young attendees, in particular, are drawn to Folkemødet’s budget-friendly aspects. Many, like a group of students from Odder Højskole, are strategically hunting for freebies to minimize their expenses. They stay at “Ung Agenda,” a campsite offering affordable accommodation for young people, and appreciate the chance to explore the city while seeking free meals and merchandise.

Despite the free offerings, the rising cost of accommodation on Bornholm is a growing concern. Hotel, apartment, and summer house owners have been criticized for inflating prices during Folkemødet, making it difficult for some to afford a visit. Some sources report a room with four bunk beds being offered for 12,000 kroner per bed for four days. This has led to concerns that Folkemødet is becoming less accessible to the general public.

Despite the price gouging for accomodations, “Ung Agenda” offers a more affordable option for young people, with packages including transport and a tent pitch available for a reasonable price. The campsite provides a Roskilde Festival-like atmosphere with music and communal activities, although with earlier noise restrictions.

As the day progresses, the atmosphere at Folkemødet becomes more festive, with attendees eagerly seeking out free beer and engaging in political discussions. The event attracts a diverse crowd, from young students to business people and politicians, all coming together to participate in Denmark’s democratic dialogue.
